Three Tips for Keeping your Belongings in Good Condition while in Storage

Putting belongings in storage is best done with care and consideration. Generally, items stored in a storage unit will be there for at least a few months and a lot can happen in that amount of time. Here are three tips to keep your effects in good condition during their time stowed away.

Three Tips for Keeping your Belongings in Good Condition while in Storage

  • Stacks, Not Rows- Items such as books are best stored by laying them flat and stacking them in a storage box, especially if other items will be stacked on top. This puts stress on the most stable, durable dimension of the book. The second best method is to line them up on end, as they would look when put on a shelf. If using this method, take care not to put anything heavy on top of your book box. The weight can damage the binding over time. It’s tempting to squeeze extra space out of a box by tucking a few books in with the spine facing up or down, but this puts stress on the binding and pages in the least stable dimension, especially if there is something piled on top of the box.
  • Roll it Up- Textiles such as heirloom quilts or large, vintage dresses are better stored rolled up than folded. Folds create high-stress areas that weaken the fabric of time. They can also lead to creases that can be difficult to remove. Removing them adds further stress and wear to already compromised areas. Rolling greatly reduces sharp folds which mean less wear. Using a layer of acid-free tissue paper when rolling adds more protection against deterioration.
  • The Annual Check-Up- Don’t forget to check in on your storage unit from time to time to make sure there aren’t problems. Issues like water leaks and insect infestation are some of the obvious concerns. Be on the lookout for crumpled or torn boxes as well. These usually present at the bottom level of a stack and can occur in a matter of months. Positioning the heaviest boxes with the most durable contents at the bottom can alleviate this. It’s also a good idea to periodically rotate the contents of your storage unit to redistribute heavy loads.
